Hello, Plastic People!

Published by chicagokid at 7:17 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Plastic people was once a term (used often by Frank Zappa) to describe the vain and wealthy whose appearance more closely resembled Barbie than an actual human being. I would like to change this connotation to a more positive one. Plastic surgery has helped many people gain self-confidence, whether it stemmed from small breasts, a disfiguring car accident, or cancer. Being a plastic person can be pretty cool.

My name is Reneé and this is the beginning of my blog on plastic surgery. I have been in the healthcare field for four years and have been working as a surgical tech. My career began on the general surgical floor of a local hospital and later I went into plastic surgery. While working at both jobs I learned a lot about correct procedure, what really happens behind the scenes, and what makes a person a great caregiver.

I decided to start this blog after seeing almost every woman’s magazine with an article on plastic surgery. Some of the articles were correct and very informative while others were completely ridiculous. Like all health care, plastic surgery has its negatives, but it also has many positives. With the rising cost of overhead, insurance, etc., many doctors who are NOT plastic surgeons have begun to do plastic surgery. This is where you run into mistakes and unhappy people.

I will be covering this topic and many others in future posts. If you have any questions, concerns, or anything of the sort, leave me a comment. I will be more than happy to answer questions so that you can get the best care possible. Please remember that I am not a medical doctor and am only telling about the cases I have seen. Everyone is different and therefore will have different needs depending on the surgery.

I think it is important to remember that many advances in plastic surgery came from helping disfigured soldiers from World War I. The trench warfare from WWI created lots of wounds to the face–mouth, nose, eyes, chin, etc–and to integrate these wounded soldiers back into society, doctors began performing restorative surgeries on the patients’ faces.

So, plastic surgery can have positives–it’s not all about vanity.

What were some of the incorrect cases about plastic surgery that your read about in magazines and why where they incorrect?

Also, how would you rate a plastic surgeon? If I were a patient, what sort of questions should I ask my doctor to find out if he or she is qualified?
